High activity, low profitability

Freight transport by road was the largest industry subclass with total operating income of NOK 31.5 billion, eight per cent more than the year before. The operating result at NOK 3.0 billion was on the other hand NOK 142 million lower than the year before. This indicates that there is a great level of competition in this industry.

Scheduled motor bus transport

The 293 KAUs in this industry had total operating income of NOK 9.1 billion in 2005, but the operating result was only NOK 369 million. This gives an operating margin of 4 per cent, lower than in most industries.

Small changes for railways and trams

Operating income in transport via railways grew by 6 per cent to NOK 5.5 billion in 2005, the total employment was 4 877 persons. Tramways and suburban transport saw small changes; the operating income was NOK 1.3 billion, 3 per cent more than in 2004.

Enterprise level

The structural business statistics for land transport are compiled both on the local KAU level and on the enterprise level. On the enterprise level the total operating income was NOK 55.0 billion in 2005, 6 per cent more than in 2004. The total number of persons employed was 65 737.

Figures on the enterprise level will usually deviate somewhat from figures compiled on the local KAU level. This is due to the fact that enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs within the enterprise.
