Downturn for telecommunications

Turnover for establishments in the telecommunications industry decreased by 2.2 per cent in the 3rd quarter of 2011, compared to the same quarter last year. Other industries in the information and communication sector, in contrast, reported growth figures.

The decrease in turnover for telecommunications follows a sustained period of reduced prices for such services, as indicated by figures in our Price indices for information and communication . Among industries that instead reported growth, figures were especially strong for computer programming, consultancy and related activities. Turnover for these establishments increased by 14 per cent from the 3rd quarter of 2010 to the 3rd quarter of 2011.

Increased turnover for tourism

Figures were also positive for the tourism industry. For instance, Norwegian hotels reported a growth in turnover of 5.8 per cent from the 3rd quarter of 2010 to the same quarter this year. Figures from our Accommodation statistics suggest that this increase can be explained by a growth in guest nights, both domestic and foreign.

Upturn for transport

Several types of transport reported positive figures in the 3rd quarter. Freight transport by road, for example, experienced a growth in turnover of 7.3 per cent from the corresponding quarter last year. Likewise, turnover for water and air transport increased by 4.2 and 2.7 per cent respectively.

Preliminary figures

Figures for the 3rd quarter are based on data for the months of July and August. Data for September are predicted using historical growth. Consequently, these figures are preliminary and subject to change.
