Growth returns for ICT

Establishments in the ICT industry are again reporting a sizeable increase in turnover, following a period of near zero growth. In total, turnover in the section Information and communication grew by 5.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2011 compared to the same quarter in 2010.

These figures thus confirm the positive trend for this industry in 2011. Growth was particularly strong for establishments offering computer programming, consultancy and related activities, where turnover increased by 13 per cent from the 2nd quarter of 2010 to the 2nd quarter of 2011. Figures in this period were also strong for information service activities.

Increased turnover for passenger transport

Likewise, all industries transporting passengers reported a growth in turnover in the second quarter. As compared to the same quarter last year, turnover increased for instance by 4.2 per cent for passenger rail transport, while the corresponding growth for passenger air transport was 6.8 per cent. It should be borne in mind, however, that air transport was severely disrupted by the eruption of an Icelandic volcano last year, contributing to especially disappointing figures in the second quarter of 2010.

Continued growth in tourism

Establishments offering accommodation and food and beverage service activities also fared well in the second quarter. In total, turnover in these industries increased by 8.7 per cent from the same quarter in 2010. Figures were especially strong for food and beverage service activities, where establishments of various kinds (e.g. restaurants, cafes and pubs) reported a growth of about 10 per cent.

Preliminary figures

Figures for the 2nd quarter are based on data for the month of April. Data for May and June are predicted using historical growth. Consequently, these figures are preliminary and subject to change.
