Increased turnover in tourism

The tourism industry experienced further growth in the 1st quarter of 2012, as turnover increased by 8.7 per cent from the 1st quarter of 2011.

This growth was evident both for establishments offering accommodation and food/beverage service activities. Turnover increased by 8.9 per cent for hotels, which was mainly due to an increase in the number of guest nights reported by these establishments (see our Accommodation statistics ). Restaurants, snack bars and catering establishments also posted strong turnover figures this quarter.

Growth for ICT

Turnover also increased in the ICT sector, especially for information service activities. From the 1st quarter of 2011 to the 1st quarter of 2012, turnover increased by 13 per cent in this division. Following a disappointing second half-year in 2011, telecommunications establishments also reported positive figures in the 1st quarter of 2012, as turnover increased by 0.8 per cent from the corresponding quarter last year.

Full steam ahead for transport

The transport sector continued to report strong figures in the 1st quarter. Turnover increased by 5.4 per cent from the same quarter of 2011 for warehousing and support activities for transportation, while freight transport by road experienced a growth of 11 per cent in this period.

Preliminary figures

Figures for the 1st quarter are based on data for the months of January and February. Data for March are predicted using historical growth. Consequently, these figures are preliminary and subject to change.
