More passengers but less freight

Figures for the third quarter of 2009 show an increase in turnover for industries transporting passengers compared to the third quarter of 2008. In contrast, turnover decreased for freight transport.

Turnover decreased in total by 8.3 per cent for the section Transportation and storage from the third quarter of last year to the third quarter of this year. However, this decrease is due to a reduction in turnover for freight transport, while turnover for passenger transport increased. This difference was most pronounced for water transport, where turnover in the third quarter decreased by 20.3 per cent for freight transport but grew 13.7 per cent for passenger transport. A similar pattern was observed for both rail and road transport.

Modest growth for restaurants

Establishments offering food and beverages are still experiencing a modest growth. Turnover for the division Restaurants and mobile food service activities, for instance, increased by 2.4 per cent from the third quarter of 2008 to the third quarter of 2009. In contrast, turnover decreased by 5.1 per cent for hotels in the same period, consistent with a reduction in the number of guest nights and price per room (see our Accommodation statistics ).

Difficult times for publishing

Turnover for establishments offering publishing activities decreased by 7.0 per cent in the third quarter this year compared to the same quarter last year. However, other information and communications industries are still reporting a growth. For instance, turnover for computer programming and consultancy increased by 3.5 per cent from the third quarter of 2008 to the third quarter of 2009, despite a drop in prices for such services (see our Price indices for information and communication ).

Change of industry classification

The turnover index is, as of the first quarter of 2009, published according to a new industry classification (SIC2007). This classification results in a number of changes to the index. For example, the old section I (Transport, storage and communication) has been divided into two sections: H (Transportation and storage) and J (Information and communication). In addition, the index has expanded to include industries not previously covered (e.g., publishing activities and information service activities). Read more about the transition to SIC2007 here .

Preliminary figures

Figures for the 3rd quarter are based on data from the months of July and August. Figures for September are predicted using historical growth. Consequently, these figures are preliminary and subject to change.

Reorganisation of public transport

Figures for 2008 in NACE 49.3 and NACE 52.2 are not directly comparable to previous years due to a reorganisation of public transport in Oslo and Akershus.
