Steady growth for telecommunications

The telecommunications industry continues to grow despite the financial crisis, with an increase in turnover of 3.7 per cent from the second quarter of 2008 to the second quarter of 2009.

Unlike other industries, establishments in the telecommunications industry thus appear resistant to the economic downturn. Telecommunication activities based on wired, wireless and satellite technology all experienced an increase in turnover in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the second quarter of 2008. Other information and communications industries, however, are struggling. Turnover decreased for instance by 8.3 per cent for establishments offering publishing activities from the second quarter of 2008 to the corresponding quarter this year.

Difficult times for hotels

Turnover decreased by 6.4 per cent for hotels in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the second quarter of 2008, consistent with a drop in the number of guest nights (see our Accommodation statistics ). In contrast, establishments offering food and beverage service activities reported a modest increase in turnover in the second quarter of 2009, as shown by a growth of 1.5 per cent for restaurants.

Decreased turnover for transport

The negative trend continues for the transport industry. Total turnover decreased by 4.8 per cent for establishments in the section Transportation and storage from the second quarter of 2008 to the corresponding quarter this year. The decline is most evident for ocean transport, freight transport by road and cargo handling. A few industries are still experiencing growth, however, including air transport where turnover increased by 2.7 per cent in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter last year.

Change of industry classification

The turnover index is, as of the first quarter of 2009, published according to a new industry classification (SN2007). This classification results in a number of changes to the index. For example, the old section I (Transport, storage and communication) has been divided into two sections: H (Transportation and storage) and J (Information and communication). In addition, the index has expanded to include industries not previously covered (e.g., publishing activities and information service activities). Read more about the transition to SN2007 here .

Preliminary figures

Figures for the 2n d quarter are based on data from the month of April. Figures for May and June are predicted using historical growth. Consequently, these figures are preliminary and subject to change.

Reorganisation of public transport

Figures for 2008 in NACE 49.3 and NACE 52.2 are not directly comparable to previous years due to a reorganisation of public transport in Oslo and Akershus.
