Increased transport performances

Both tonnage carried and transport performed increased in 1999 compared with 1998. Transport performed by Norwegian-registered road haulage vehicles was just under 3.2 billion ton-kilometres in 1999. This is an increase of 5.7 per cent compared with the year before.

Overall tonnage carried amounted to almost 4 million tons in 1999. This is an increase of 1.4 per cent compared with 1998. Of this, 1.8 million tons were transported from Norway and 2 million tons to Norway. Cabotage and cross-trade amounted to 0.14 million tons, or just under 3.5 per cent of the total tonnage carried.

The total distance driven with and without cargo in connection with trips abroad came to 200 million kilometres in 1999. This is an increase of 8.8 per cent compared with the year before. Of this, 41.6 million kilometres, or 20.7 per cent, was driven in Norway in connection with the foreign trips. The percentage of kilometres driven without cargo was 11.9 per cent.

Even though the Norwegian-registered road haulage vehicles transported less goods from Norway than to Norway they performed more transport work. This is because the goods were hauled farther when exported than when imported. The number of ton-kilometres performed on transports from Norway went up 5.5 per cent in 1999 compared with the same period the year before. Transport performance in connection with trips to Norway went up 4.6 per cent the same period.

In 1999 transports from Sweden accounted for 62.4 per cent of the total tonnage carried to Norway, against 65.9 per cent in 1998. The transport of goods to and from EU countries rose in 1999 compared with 1998. Altogether 3.8 million tons of goods were hauled to and from these countries in 1999 against 3.7 million tons in 1998.

The overall transport performance, including domestic transports, with Norwegian lorries was 15.7 billion ton-kilometres in 1999. This is 2 per cent more than the corresponding year before. The foreign transport share of the total transport performance amounted to 20.3 per cent in 1999.

Capacity utilization on trips with cargo was 64.5 per cent in 1999. In assessing capacity utilization it must be taken into account that the degree of utilization for a number of goods is limited by volume and not by weight. If a correction is made for volume goods, capacity utilization increases by 4.9 percentage points to 69.4 per cent.
