Four counties dominate culture conservation

Four counties constitute 50 per cent of the protected cultural heritage area in Norway, which in total makes up less than 0.1 per cent of Norway’s mainland area. In comparison, almost 15 per cent is protected by the Nature Conservation Act.

Cultural heritage protection in Oppland, Buskerud, Rogaland and Nord-Trøndelag amounts to 50 per cent of the total area protected by the Cultural Heritage Act in Norway. The total area protected by the Cultural Heritage Act is 202 km2, approximately half the area of Norway’s biggest lake, Mjøsa.

Almost 15 per cent, or 47 145 km2, of Norway’s mainland area, was protected under the Nature Conservation Act at the end of 2008. National parks constituted more than 50 per cent of this area. The largest change was found among nature reserves, with a total increase of 461 km2 .

The population growth and modernisation of society have increased the pressure on natural and cultural heritage in recent decades. The Nature Conservation Act and the Cultural Heritage Act are important tools for the authorities in safeguarding a diversity of nature and culture for the future.
