Nature reserves increased by 461 km2

Preliminary numbers show few changes in protected area in 2008. National parks still constitute more than 50 per cent of Norway’s protected area, but nature reserves had the highest increase both in number and area.

A total of 47 145 km2, or almost 15 per cent of Norway’s mainland area, was protected by the end of 2008. National parks constituted more than 50 per cent of this area. The largest change was found among nature reserves, with a total increase of 461 km2.

Over the last decades there has been an increasing pressure on natural areas, with fragmentation and size reduction as results. The Nature Conservation Act is an important tool for the authorities in safeguarding a diversity of habitats and landscapes for the future.
