Highest GDP per capita in Oslo, Rogaland and Hordaland

Different population patterns and industry structures are reflected in the national accounts by county. Gross Domestic Product per Region (GDPR) per capita in Oslo, Rogaland and Hordaland is above the 2001 national average. GDPR per employee is more evenly distributed.

In Oslo, GDPR per capita was 100 per cent above the national average if we exclude oil and gas activities on the Norwegian continental shelf. People who live in other counties, particularly in Akershus, contribute towards a high percentage of the value added in Oslo. Oslo and Akershus have therefore been treated as one region in the analyses. GDPR per employee in Oslo is 17 per cent above the national average. Finnmark has the lowest value, 29 per cent below the national average for GDPR per capita and 20 per cent below the national average for GDPR per employee.

Gross domestic product per inhabitant and per employed person, by county. 2001. Total without the extra region=100

Compared with the 2000 figures, the highest growth rate is found in Vestfold. The growth is, however, mainly due to new structural business statistics for the shipping industry.

Differences in industry structure

The differences in GDPR per employee are mainly due to differences in industry structure. The differences are shown here by estimating an index of GDPR per employee and comparing it with the national average. Counties with strong capital-intensive industries have a higher index value than counties with less capital-intensive industries. Counties with a high share of primary industries will have a lower index value of GDPR per employee. The financial industry and typical knowledge industries contribute to a higher GDPR per employee in the secondary industries. Finnmark, which has a large share of employees in the public sector, has a lower index than Rogaland, with its petroleum-related industries.

The highest gross value added can be found in the secondary industries, where every employee contributes NOK 540 000 on average to the overall gross value added. Oil and gas activities account for almost 50 percent of GDPR per employee in these industries. Gross value added per employee in the primary industries is NOK 280 000 on average, whereas in the service industries the figure is NOK 460 000. GDPR per employee is highest in Oslo, Hordaland and Rogaland and lowest in Nord-Trøndelag, Oppland and the northernmost counties.
