Increase in church weddings

10 400 couples were wedded by the Church of Norway in 2007. The number of church weddings increased by 760 or 8 per cent from 2006.

The proportion of church weddings to all weddings was 44 per cent.

93 per cent received a church burial

42 900 were baptised, 42 500 were confirmed and 38 800 were buried by the Church of Norway in 2007. The proportion of baptised people to births was 74 per cent. 67 per cent of all 15-year-olds were confirmed in the church. 93 per cent of all the deceased received a church burial.

Small increase in resignations

8 300 members left the Church of Norway during 2007, an increase of 2 per cent compared with the previous year. By the year-end 2007, 82 per cent of the Norwegian population were members in the Church of Norway.

Fewer services and participants

67 560 services were conducted and more than 6.4 million participants at services were registered during 2007. Compared with the previous year there were 1 500 fewer services and 150 000 fewer participants. On average 100 participants attended each service.

On average NOK 436 per capita

On average the municipalities spent NOK 436 per capita on the Church of Norway, graveyards and crematoria. In addition to public subsidies, the church itself collected some NOK 248 million through collection and gifts.
