0.5 million attend Christmas Eve services

A total of 560 000 persons attended Christmas Eve services held by the Church of Norway in 2013; 6 000 more than the year before. This represents 11 per cent of the population. The number of persons who participated in communion was also higher than the year before.

The number of Christmas Eve services held in 2013 was 2 300; somewhat more than the year before. On average, 247 attended each service. A total of 32 400 services with communion were held, and 1.3 million persons participated in communion. This represents an increase in both the number of services with communion and the number of participants from the year before.

A total of just fewer than 6 million persons attended services held by the Church of Norway. On average, 93 attended each service; the same as the year before. A total of 64 000 services were held, which is about 800 less than the year before.

A total of 36 600 baptisms, 40 100 confirmations and 37 200 funerals were held by the Church of Norway in 2013. The proportion of baptisms to births was 62 per cent; a fall from 64 per cent in 2012. Sixty-four per cent of all 15 year-olds were confirmed in the church.

The population is all the registered geographical parishes in Norway the relevant year. The parish is the basic unit in the Church of Norway. The number of parishes reporting in 2013 was 1 235. The number is reduced every last years due to merging of the parishes.
