Fewer moose and roe deer killed by traffic

In the 2011/2012 hunting year, a total of 5 000 moose and roe deer were killed by traffic. This is nearly 1 300 fewer than in the previous year and the lowest number since the hunting year 2000/2001.

Roe deer, moose and red deer killed by car or train. 1990/91-2011/12

The registered mortality of cervids excluding regular hunting totalled 8 300. This is a decline of 21 per cent or almost 2 300 animals compared to the previous hunting year. In total, 5 000 cervids were killed by car and 800 by train.

Most roe deer accidents

Roe deer are particularly vulnerable. A total of almost 3 300 roe deer were killed by traffic; 81 by train and 3 270 by car. A total of almost 1 700 moose were killed by traffic; 700 by train and 1 000 by car.

Killed by other reasons

The category “Killed by other reasons” includes animals that have perished, have been killed by predators or for humane reasons etc. In the 2011/2012 hunting year, the number of moose killed due to one of these reasons was 1 200. The corresponding figure for roe deer and red deer was 700 and 600 respectively.
