20 cervids killed by traffic every day

In the 2009/10 hunting year, a total of 6 400 cervids were killed by car. This is nearly 100 more than in the previous year, and the highest number ever registered. Nine hundred animals were killed by train.

Roe deer, moose and red deer killed by car or train. 1990/91-2009/10

Registered mortality of cervids apart from regular hunting totalled 10 600; an increase of 5 per cent from the previous hunting year. In total, 6 400 cervids were killed by car and 900 by train.

Most roe deer accidents

Roe deer are particularly vulnerable. A total of almost 4 400 roe deer were killed by traffic, 140 by train and 4 200 by cars. A total of almost 2 200 moose were killed by traffic, 700 by train and 1 450 by cars.

Killed by other reasons

The category “Killed by other reasons” includes animals that have perished, have been killed by predators or for humane reasons etc. In the 2009/10 hunting year, the number of moose killed by one of these reasons was 1 300. The corresponding figure for roe deer was 1 100.
