Increasing number of cervids killed by traffic

In the 2008/09 hunting year, more than 7 500 cervids were killed by traffic. This is nearly 500 more than in the previous year, and the highest number ever registered.

Roe deer, moose and red deer killed by car or train. 1990/91-2008/09

Registered mortality of cervids apart from regular hunting totalled 10 155; an increase of 7 per cent from the previous hunting year. Three out of four animals were killed by traffic. In total, 6 300 cervids were killed by car and 1 200 by train.

Most roe deer accidents

Roe deer are particularly vulnerable. A total of 4 300 roe deer were killed by traffic; 215 by train and 4 085 by car. A total of 2 373 moose were killed by traffic; 940 by train and 1 433 by car.

Killed by other reasons

The category “Killed by other reasons” includes animals that have perished, have been killed by predators or for humane reasons etc. In the 2008/09 hunting year, the number of moose in this category was 1 219. The corresponding figure for roe deer was 836.
