More cervids killed in traffic

Beyond ordinary hunting, cars and train continue to represent the greatest threat to cervids. During the 2002/03 hunting year, a number of 6,700 deer were killed by car or train. This is an increase of 14 per cent from the previous hunting year, and is mainly caused by an increased number of killed moose.

Most animals killed by cars

The ratio between cars and trains shows that cars account for 82 per cent of all game collisions. Totally, car and 1,200 hit 5,500 cervids by train. Roe deers are particularly vulnerable. A total of 3,600 roe deer were killed in traffic the hunting year 2002/03, and that corresponds to 12 per cent of the number felled in ordinary hunting. ( See small game and roe deer hunting ). The number of moose killed in traffic corresponds to 7 per cent of the number felled during ordinary hunting. ( See moose hunting )

700 moose collisions in Hedmark

All together 1,000 cervids were killed by car and train in Hedmark county last hunting year. This represents an increase of 28 per cent, mainly caused by moose.

Other reasons

The category ”other reasons” covers animals that have perished, been killed by predators, are killed for humane reasons etc. Totally, 1,350 moose, 380 red deer, 50 wild reindeer and 800 roe deer were registered killed for "other reasons".
