6 000 deer and moose killed in traffic

Nearly 6 000 roe deer, moose, red deer and wild reindeer were killed by car or train during the hunting year 2001/02. In an average, 16 animals were run down every day.

Apart from ordinary hunting, car and train represent the major threat for deer and moose. Of the total non-harvest mortality, 70 per cent were run down by car or train. Roe deer are particularly vulnerable. Totally 3 350 roe deer, 1 945 moose, 611 red deer and 7 wild reindeer were killed by car or train. The number of moose killed in traffic corresponds to 5 per cent of the number felled in ordinary hunting.

Most animals killed by car

The ratio between cars and trains shows that cars account for 86 per cent of all collisions. Totally 5 134 deers were hit by car and 779 by train.

Hedmark on top of the list

Most cervids are killed by traffic in Hedmark county. A total number of 809 cervids were killed in traffic in this county in 2001/02, of which 478 were moose.

Other reasons

The category ”other reasons” covers animals that have perished, been killed by predators, killed for humane reasons etc. In 2001/02 a total of 2 202 cervids were registered killed by ”other reasons ”. In addition 237 were felled as noxious and 96 were felled illegally.
