Non-harvest mortality of cervids, 2000/2001

For the 2000/01 hunting year the registered reduction of deer outside ordinary hunting came to 4 132 roe deer, 3 338 moose, 1 082 red deer and 65 wild reindeer. Compared with last year, this is an increase for roe deer and moose and a decrease for red deer and wild reindeer. Killed red deer and moose made up 10 per cent of ordinary hunting.

Outside ordinary hunting, car and train represent the major threat. During the 2000/01 hunting year,

3 313 roe deer, 1 968 moose and 461 red deer were killed by car or train. 80 per cent of the roe deer reduction is caused by this reason, while the corresponding figure for moose is 59 per cent.

Most moose hit by car or train in Hedmark

During the last hunting year, 431 moose were killed in Hedmark, followed by Buskerud with 253 animals and Akershus with 211 animals.

Less poaching of moose?

There has been a sharp decline in illegally felled moose during the last 10 years, while the figures for other species are quite stable. The category "other reasons" covers animals that have perished, died, been killed by predators, destroyed for humane reasons etc. For the 2000/01 hunting year the registered reductions were 1 277 moose, 490 red deer, 60 wild reindeer and 717 roe deer.
