Cars and trains kill most deer

Outside ordinary hunting, cars and trains continue to represent the greatest threat to deer. During the 1999/2000 hunting year,
5 600 deer were killed by car or train.

Roe deer, moose and deer killed by car and train. 1990/1991-1999/2000

For the 1999/2000 hunting year the registered reductions came to 3 200 moose, 1 200 red deer, 100 wild reindeer and 3 900 roe deer, adding up to a total reduction of 8 400 deer. The numbers are about the same as last year. Of the total reduction, 67 per cent were run over by cars or trains. Roe deer are particularly vulnerable: 80 per cent of all reductions here are caused by collisions with cars and trains. The comparative numbers for moose, deer, and wild reindeer are 60, 46, and five per cent. If we look at the ratio between cars and trains, the statistics show that cars account for 86 per cent of all collisions.

Most moose collisions occur in Nord-Trøndelag

During the last hunting year, 336 moose were killed in Nord-Trøndelag. Hedmark was right behind with 323 animals. In Møre og Romsdal, 214 deer were killed by car or train.

Other reasons

The category "other reasons" covers animals that have perished, died, been killed by predators, destroyed for humane reasons etc. For the 1999/2000 hunting year the registered reductions were 1 176 moose, 537 red deer, 98 wild reindeer and 690 roe deer.

Poaching

Registered reduction due to poaching accounts for only a tiny percentage of the total reduction. Fifty-three moose, 27 deer and 18 roe deer were shot in connection with illegal hunting.
