Stable income distribution

There were only marginal changes in the distribution of household income in 2011. Those belonging to the upper percentiles of the distribution had a somewhat stronger rise in household income than those in the lower part of the distribution.

Distribution of household after-tax income per consumption unit (EU-scale). Share of total income. Decile 1 and decile 10. 2006-2011. Per cent

There was a substantial rise in equivalent household income last year in all parts of the income distribution. Median equivalent income rose by 3.3 per cent in real terms in 2011. People belonging to the 90th percentile (the income of one in ten of the population is above this level) had an increase in equivalent income of 3.9 per cent, while people belonging to the 10th percentile (the income of one in ten of the population is below this level) increased their income by 2.6 per cent.

Between 2006 and 2011, the growth in equivalent income has been shared more or less equally by people in all parts of the income distribution. The 90th percentile had an increase in real terms of 16.3 percent, while the 10th percentile grew by 15.5 per cent. The median income (50th percentile) rose by 15.3 per cent in the same period.

Minor changes in inequality since 2006

The share of total household income received by the top decile was 20.6 per cent in 2011. This was the same share as in the year before. The share of income received by the bottom decile was 4 per cent, also the same share as the previous year. Other summary measures of inequality suggest that there have been only minor changes in the income distribution between 2006 and 2011.
