Stable patterns of household expenditure

Housing still makes up the largest item of consumption spending, closely followed by transport. Recreation and culture is ranked as the third largest spending item, while spending on food is number four.

Due to small yearly samples is it only possible to publish results from the survey for groups of households when samples for tree years are combined.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel make up the largest expenditure item, at NOK 80 850 on average per household per year in the period. This amounts to 26.2 per cent of total spending, approximately one-fourth.

Spending on transport appears to have stabilised its share of the total. In the 2002-2004 period transport amounted to approximately one-sixth of household spending, at NOK 53 500.

The third largest item of household spending is recreation and culture, at NOK 38 100 - 12.4 per cent in the period.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages comprise on average NOK 36 550 per household per year or 11.9 per cent in the period 2002-2004.

The share of spending on clothing and footwear has been stable over the past years, and is at about five per cent for the average household. The average household spent NOK 16 800 on clothing and footwear per year in the period.

Furniture and household equipment make up nearly seven per cent of the average spending. Average household spending is stable at just above NOK 20 800.

Private expenditure on health care made up NOK 8 850 or 2.9 per cent of spending per.

Spending on communication (postage and telephone services) comprises 2.6 per cent of expenditure or NOK 8 100 per year.

Education is a small expenditure item for the average household, at NOK 1 000 in the period 2002-2004 or 0.3 per cent of spending.
