Expenditure in private households increased

Expenditure in private households increased in 2000. Housing was the biggest expense for the consumers, and the total expenditure was NOK 289 500.

In 2000 housing amounted to 23.7 per cent of the total expenditure, or NOK 68 500 on average per household.

For many years Norwegians have spent a smaller percentage on food. The last year however, this tendency has been brought to a standstill. The change may be a result of households buying more expensive food or it may be that the sample consists of larger households. Future surveys for more years may verify if this trend is substantial.

In 1999 the average household spent 11.8 per cent [corrected 29.04.2002] on food; in 2000 the figure was 12.3 per cent or NOK 35 600.

Transportation

Transport expenditure is the second largest outlay for the average household. In 2000 transport amounted to NOK 58 400 in 2000 or 20.2 per cent.

Expenses spent on culture and recreation were 12.3 per cent of the spending, this amounted to NOK 35 600 in 2000. Together with expenses on food and beverages culture and recreation were the third largest expenditure for the average household.

Clothing and footwear

The percentage of money going to clothing and footwear has increased slowly, and was 6.6 per cent in 2000. The average household spent NOK 13 300 on clothing and footwear in 1966, where as the expenditure amounted to NOK 19 000 in 2000. Since prices of clothing and footwear have decreased in recent years, this means that Norwegians are buying more clothing and footwear than the amount shows.

On average furniture and household equipment made up slightly more than 6 per cent and totalled NOK 18 800 in 2000.

Private expenses on health care were about 3 per cent and are NOK 7 600.

Spending on postage and telephone services has increased for many years, but due to lower prices this is not the case any longer. An average household is spending NOK 6 000 on this expenditure, which is 2.1 per cent of the total.
