Decreased production of petroleum in 2009

The production of gas and oil (including condensate and NGL) ended at 239 Sm3 million oil equivalent (o.e.) in 2009, a decrease by one per cent or 4.5 million Sm3 o.e. compared to 2008. The production of gas increased, while the production of oil decreased.

The Norwegian oil production peaked in 2000, when production ended at 181 million Sm3 o.e. In the following years the production declined. In 2009 production ended at 115 million Sm3 o.e., 66 million Sm3 o.e. or 37 per cent less then in 2000. This development has taken place despite that there where 23 more oil producing fields on the Norwegian continental shelf in 2009 than there where in 2000. In 2009 there where 59 fields that produced oil. If we compare 2009 to 2008 the reduction in the production equals 7 million Sm3 o.e or 5.9 per cent.

 Increased gas production

The development within the production of gas is different from the oil production. Norway started producing gas in 1977 and since then the production has increased almost every year. In 2000 the gas production amounted to 50 million Sm3 o.e. , in 2009 the production was double with 103 million Sm3 o.e. and ended at 103 million Sm3 o.e. This increase equals 108 per cent over the last nine years. In 2009 the gas production made out 43 per cent of the total petroleum production, in 2000 the share was 20 per cent. Compared to 2008, the gas production grew with 4.2 million Sm3 o.e or 4.3 per cent.
