Slight increase in manufacturing turnover

Seasonally-adjusted figures showed that the total turnover in Norwegian manufacturing increased by 0.4 per cent from November 2016 to January 2017 compared to the previous three-month period. A growth of 3.4 per cent is also recorded from December 2016 to January 2017.

The index value for turnover in manufacturing was 135.7 (2005=100) in the period November 2016 to January 2017, compared to 135.2 in the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures

Three-month change: notable fall for machinery and equipment

Despite the slight change in total turnover, some of the industries showed significant increases or decreases. Seasonally-adjusted figures showed that machinery and equipment had a strong decrease of 23 per cent from November 2016 to January 2017, compared to the previous three-month period. Fabricated metal products and computer and electrical equipment edged down 5.1 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. 

On the contrary, the grouping refined petroleum products, and chemical and pharmaceutical products showed a prominent increase of 20 per cent, mainly as a result of a significant increase in January 2017. Moreover, a rise in the following industries helped to offset the downtrend in the total turnover in this period:

  • Basic metals
  • Repair, installation of machinery
  • Rubber, plastic and mineral products

Total Norwegian manufacturing turnover went up 3.4 per cent from December 2016 to January 2017, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. 

The largest increase was for the grouping refined petroleum products, and chemical and pharmaceutical products industry, growing by 45 per cent, as a result of increases in both production volume and prices of refined petroleum products

In the opposite direction, computer and electrical equipment and rubber, plastic and mineral products had a declining turnover of 6.2 and 4.0 per cent respectively in the same period. 

Monthly change: Norway and the euro area shows slight changes in December 2016

Norwegian manufacturing turnover went down 0.4 per cent from November to December 2016, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Manufacturing turnover in the euro area showed an increase of 0.3 per cent. Among the Nordic countries, Denmark rose 8.5 per cent, and Sweden edged up 5.9 per cent, according to Eurostat.
