More student homes

In the 4th quarter of 2016, building permission was given for 10 300 dwellings, with 1.3 million square metres of utility floor space. This is 16 per cent up from the same quarter in the previous year. New student homes contributed to the growth.

The greatest increase in building permission for dwellings is within buildings for communities, which has more than doubled compared to the 4th quarter of 2015. Detached houses have, however, experienced a 4 per cent decrease in the same period. 

Seasonally-adjusted figures

New building start permits for dwellings are almost unchanged from the 3rd to the 4th quarter of 2016, according to seasonal figures.

Figures vary considerably from quarter to quarter. The long-term trend shows good growth in the number of building permits since the 3rd quarter of 2014, with a minor decrease last quarter.

For other than residential buildings, seasonal figures also show almost no change in permits for utility floor space from the 3rd to the 4th quarter last year. 

Oslo area on top 

The counties of Akershus and Oslo are on top, with 1 860 and 1 316 dwellings respectively. The county of Sør-Trøndelag comes third, with 1 048 dwellings. 

Increase in industrial sector

In the 4th quarter of 2016, building permission was given for 1.1 million metres of utility floor space in industrial buildings. This is an increase of 8 per cent compared with the 4th quarter of 2015. 

838 new dwellings in old buildings

Due to rebuilding projects, 838 new dwellings were registered. Of these transformation dwellings, 266 were the result of rebuilding residential buildings, while 543 were from industrial buildings.

653 demolished dwellings 

In the 4th quarter of 2016, a total of 653 dwellings were demolished, of which 411 were detached houses. For buildings other than residential buildings, 3 636 buildings were demolished, 1 268 buildings in the industrial sector were pulled down, and 279 holiday homes and 2 089 private garages were demolished.

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the Cadastre (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once.

Due to delays in the registration of building start permits from local authorities for 2015, national figures for 2015 are presented as preliminary. The figures in Statbank refer to the status as of 1 January of each year and include preliminary figures for 1 January 2016.

The statistics on buildings do not cover changes to dwellings caused by rebuilding of existing building stock (i.e. new dwellings due to reconstruction of utility floor space from industry to dwellings).
