Sharp profit increase for securities brokers

Norwegian securities broking enterprises experienced a substantial increase in profits in 2005. The increase of NOK 1 297 million was due to an improvement in operating profits.

The majority of income in securities broking enterprises comes from trade in financial instruments. The profit figures are therefore affected by the activity in the securities market. The trade at Oslo Stock Exchange increased by 67 per cent from NOK 906 billion to NOK 1 512 billion from 2004 to 2005.

64 per cent increase in operating profit.

The operating income increased from NOK 5 158 million in 2004 to NOK 8 437 million in 2005.

In the same period, operating expenses increased by NOK 1 243 million to NOK 4 476 million. The main sources of income were management of securities and income from issues and advisory activities. . Personnel costs were the largest operating expense, and increased by 53 per cent to NOK 2 504 million.

Larger stock og shares and primary capital certificates.

In 2005, the stock of shares and primary capital certificates increased by 47 per cent to NOK 1 421 million. The stock of bonds increased by 7 per cent to NOK 128 million. At the same time, the stock of certificates increased by 259 per cent to NOK 1 143 million. Total assets increased by 72 per cent to NOK 17 639 million.

 

These statistics only include securities broking enterprises that are separate legal entities with a licence from the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway.
