The nation-wide associations for wage earners had 1 498 000 members per 31 December 2002, about 24 000 more than in 2001.

The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) had about 800 000 members and The Confederation of Vocational Unions (YS) had about 200 000 members at the end of 2002. This was an increase of 4 000 members in LO and 3 000 members in YS compared with 2001. The Confederation of Higher Education Unions (UHO) had an increase of 8 000 members up to 223 000 in 2002. The Federation of Norwegian Professional Association had 128 000 members, an increase of 6 000 from 2001. The number of members outside the four large main associations was 147 000, an increase of about 4 000 from 2001.

Employers' associations

The Confederation of Norwegian Business and Industry (NHO) organized 16 400 member enterprises with 449 000 employees in 2002. An increase of 500 enterprises and about 1 000 employees compared with 2001. NAVO: Norwegian Association of Public Owned Enterprises increased the number of member enterprises from 149 in 2001 to 182 in 2002. The number of employees in the member enterprises are almost doubled from 2001 and is now 177 000. This is mainly due to the fact that NAVO took over the employer responsibility, from KS, for the publicly run hospitals from 1 January 2002. The Association of Local Authorities (KS) had a corresponding decrease in the number of member enterprises from 2001 to 2002.

About the statistical basis

The statistics cover employers' and nation-wide associations for wage earners that assist their members in wage agreements and wage negotiations and the main associations to which the individual organizations belong. Organizations that limit their activities to questions of a purely professional nature are not included in the statistics. The number of members of nation-wide associations for wage earners includes all registered members and includes nonworking students, pensioners etc. The statistics cover the number of members per 31 December 2002.

Corrected figures 15.12.2003

Statistics Norway present corrected figures for members of employer organizations for the years 2001 and 2002. In co-operation with the organizations there has been carried out a thorough revision of the data concerning member enterprises with a tariff agreement. This is about the same figures as for 2001.
