Employment in local kind-of-activity units in real estate, renting and business activities totalled about 198 500 in 1998.

Of these, around 15 200 were employed in accounting, auditing and tax consultancy, just over 31 400 in architectural and technical consultancy and around 19 500 in cleaning. Enterprises involved in computer and related services employed just under 26 200 persons in 1998.

Employment concentrated around Oslo

Just over 24 per cent of the employment at the local kind-of-activity unit level in real estate, renting and business activities was in Oslo. This corresponds to about 67 500 employees. Together with Akershus, Oslo employed more than one-third of all employees in the industry. The concentration of employees in Oslo and Akershus is greater in computer and related services than for other industries, with more than 45 per cent or 16 700 employees out of a total of 26 200.

Outside Oslo and Akershus employment is concentrated in counties with larger cities. Hordaland and Rogaland have respectively 8.4 and 7.3 per cent of the employees, while Sør-Trøndelag has five per cent. In computer and related services these three counties claim respectively 8.7, 7.1 and 5.3 per cent of employment. The breakdown of sales and gross investments follows the same pattern.
