Increased trade in services

Norwegian imports and exports in services increased in 2010 compared to 2009. When excluding figures from the shipping industry, imports of services reached NOK 130 billion; a NOK 20 billion increase from the year before. Exports in services from Norway increased by NOK 13 billion to a total of NOK 113 billion.

Services related to oil and gas exploration dominated the import of services to Norway, and accounted for nearly one third of all imports of services in 2010. The value of these imports reached NOK 38.9 billion, up NOK 4.9 billion from 2009. This was equivalent to an 18 per cent increase in value. Business services were the second most imported service type, with an imported value of NOK 22.6 billion. Within this service type imports rose by NOK 4.8 billion, representing an increase of 13 per cent compared to 2009.

Norway’s most important export of services was business services, with a total value of NOK 31.6 billion. This accounted for 28 per cent of all Norwegian exports of services, when shipping enterprises are excluded from the statistics. Services related to oil and gas exploration came second, with a 20 per cent share of the exports - which amounted to NOK 22.9 billion. Exports related to contract work and repairs ended with a total value of NOK 9.5 billion, down by NOK 2.5 billion from 2009.

External trade in services, by continent. 2010. Per cent

External trade mostly with EU and Nordic countries

Norway’s external trade in services largely takes place with European and Nordic countries. The most important region for Norwegian exports in services is the EU countries outside the Nordic region, which accounted for nearly 30 per cent of the total exports. The Nordic countries bought about 18 per cent of our service exports.

The same applies to the import of services, where two thirds of all imports come from EU countries, including the Nordic region. Forty-one per cent of total imports of services came from EU countries, while 25 per cent came from our Nordic neighbours.

The statistics on external trade in services are undergoing a change in methodology. Therefore, the figures from the shipping industry are not included in this article for 2010. Because of this change, previous publications in this statistical series cannot be used in comparison with this article.

About the statistics

From 2010, the statistics started using SIC2007 Standard Industrial Classification for grouping trade industries, while previously published articles used SIC2002. This can lead to some changes in the grouping of trade industries and difficulties may arise when comparing these two units.

The statistics on external trade in services for non-financial enterprises are part of the statistical basis for Norway’s Balance of Payments. These statistics do not include trade in services for financial enterprises, households, non-profit organisations and public administration. The figures presented here are therefore not comparable with the figures presented in Balance of Payments - Current and Capital Account (cf. About the statistics).

The statistics on external trade in services were established in 2005 when Norway’s central bank discontinued their foreign payment statistics, which were an important basis for the Balance of Payments. This article presents the 2009 figures for external trade in services for main types of services for non-financial enterprises, including enterprises operating in ocean transport. Figures on external trade in services regarding geographical specification are also included.

The purpose of the statistics on external trade in services is to provide information about the service flows between Norway and other countries. Income and expenditure in connection with exports and imports of services to and from other countries are important economic indicators both in describing structural changes and in monitoring economic trends (cf. About the statistics on limitations and other conditions).
