Norwegian enterprises around the world

New statistics show the activity of Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad, by measuring the number of enterprises, employment and turnover. The geographical breakdown highlights the EU as the most important investment area, with Sweden as the predominant country.

The survey shows that Norwegian-controlled enterprises controlled 2 678 enterprises abroad at the end of 2009. The enterprises were located in 110 countries, of which 69 per cent were in the EU. Sweden hosted 24 per cent of the enterprises, followed by Denmark (7 per cent), Germany (6 per cent) and United Kingdom (6 per cent).

Employment - breakdown by country groups. 2009

Aggregate turnover in Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad in 2009 amounted to NOK 666 billion, of which 65 per cent (NOK 432 billion) was in EU countries. Asia and Central and North- America followed, with 13 and 11 per cent respectively. Manufacturing (38 per cent) and wholesale and retail trade (20 per cent) were the most important industries in total. In Sweden, Norwegian-controlled enterprises had a turnover of NOK 144 billion. The industries within wholesale and retail trade and manufacturing had the highest turnover. In 2008, figures show a total aggregate turnover of NOK 653 billion; NOK 13 billion less than in 2009. The geographical allocation was approximately the same as in 2009.

The statistics show that Norwegian-controlled enterprises employed 218 313 persons abroad, 58 per cent in the EU, 18 per cent in Asia and 10 per cent in Central and North America. A total of 45 521 of the employed were in Sweden, of which 17 956 was in manufacturing.

The statistics describe the activity of foreign-controlled enterprises in a country. An enterprise is deemed as Norwegian-controlled when a Norwegian institutional unit controls, directly or indirectly, more than half of the shares or voting power. The statistics are compiled according to the ultimate controlling institutional unit (UCI) concept. In a chain of control, UCI is defined as an institutional unit that is not controlled by another institutional unit.

The statistics cover a sample of the Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad. Only economically active enterprises are included in the population. The statistics are based on a cut-off sampling survey, and cover the largest Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad in addition to a sample of smaller enterprises. The size of the sampling survey has increased since the first year (2008), but all of the largest enterprises have been included the whole time.
