Traditional gender choices

The popular education organisations arranged 40 200 courses with 504 200 participants in 2010. Participation in aesthetic and handicraft courses was the highest.

There were 16 400 courses with 212 000 participants within aesthetic and handicraft. Sixty-two per cent of participants within aesthetic and handicraft were female.

Men and women largely followed the traditional pattern in their selection of subjects. While men were clearly in the majority with 78 per cent taking science, industrial and technical subjects, women made up 70 per cent of the participants attending service courses.

Older in computer courses

Ninety-two per cent of the course participants were broken down by age groups. The age group 14-29 accounted for 26 per cent, while 35 per cent were in the age group 30-49 and 39 per cent in the age group of 50 and older.

The age group 50 years and older had a clear majority of participants in courses in business and ICT by 61 per cent. The age group 14-29 was in the majority within humanities, philosophy and ethics by 58 per cent. The age group 30-49 accounted for 60 per cent within health, social and sports.
