(Text, figures and tables are revised 15 February 2002.)

Preliminary figures by the 1s t of October 2001 show a large proportion of women among adult pupils in upper secondary education. Among pupils between 25-29 years, women comprise 56.7 per cent, and among pupils 30 years and older they constitute a share of 67.3 per cent.

Largest share of adult pupils in Nordland

The national average of pupils above 20 years is 11.6 per cent of total number of pupils. Nordland has the largest share with 17.7 per cent. This is followed by Troms with approximately 18.3 per cent. Akershus has the lowest proportion of pupils above 20 years with only 4.6 per cent.

Nordland also has the largest share of pupils 30 years and older, a share of 10.3 per cent. Akershus has the lowest proportion within this age group with just above 1 per cent.

Most pupils have parents with upper secondary education

Among the total number of pupils in upper secondary education, approximately 55 per cent have parents with upper secondary education. Close to 39 per cent have parents with higher education, while nearly 6 per cent have parents with primary and lower secondary education. This must be seen in conjunction with the fact that the number of inhabitants in Norway with a level of education below upper secondary has been more than halved since 1970. In the autumn of 2000 the proportion was only 22 per cent. See also Education-level in the population .

Continuing decrease in numbers of pupils

For the 2001/2002 school year roughly 162 000 pupils are registered in upper secondary education. This is a reduction of about 1 800 pupils during the last year.

From 1995 there has been a decline in the number of pupils. This is probably due to a decline in the population in the age group between 16-18 years, since the share has been stable.

These statistics are published annually.
