Proportion of the 25-64-year-old population, by highest level of education attained.OECD-countries. 2008. Per cent

During the last 10 years, the proportion of people with a tertiary education has increased by 6 percentage points. For the same period, the proportion with a long tertiary education increased by 2 percentage points. In 2010, about 29 per cent did not have an upper secondary education.

Most people have attained tertiary education in natural science, vocational and technical subjects

Thirty-three per cent of those who have attained a long tertiary education did so in natural science, vocational and technical subjects. Among men with a long tertiary education, 42 per cent attained a long tertiary education in this field of education. Most women, 24 per cent, attained a long tertiary education in the field of social science and law.

High increase in the proportion of women with a higher education

In autumn 2010, more than half of all females aged 25-29 had a higher education. Within the last 10 years, this proportion has increased by 10 percentage points. The corresponding proportion of men has increased by only two percentage points in this period, to 32 per cent. Within the 30-39 age group with a higher education, there were 51 per cent women and 36 per cent men in 2010. Within 10 years, this is an increase of 17 and 8 per cent respectively.

Norwegians’ level of education is still among the highest

The OECD’s publication Education at a Glance 2010 provides inter alia indicators on level of educational attainment. In 2008, 36 per cent of the Norwegian population aged 25 to 64 years had attained a tertiary education. As an average for OECD countries, 28 per cent of the population aged 25-64 years had attained a tertiary education. In Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the USA over 40 per cent had a tertiary education. Finland has the highest share with a higher education among the Nordic countries, with 37 per cent.

The number of persons with an unknown level of education is excluded when calculating proportions for the population’s level of education. The number of persons with an unknown level of education is much higher in Oslo than in other counties. A large proportion of people with an unknown level of education is made up of immigrants.
