Parents of university students have higher education

More than half of the students enrolled at universities and scientific colleges have parents with tertiary education, at the state colleges one in three have parents with tertiary education.

Of the students enrolled at universities and scientific colleges, 24 per cent had parents with a post-graduate degree. 32 per cent had parents with a shorter tertiary education of up to four years. Only one in three had parents with an upper secondary school education as their highest education. For the state colleges the corresponding percentages were 8 and 25 per cent, while over half had parents with an education at the upper secondary school level as their highest education.

48 per cent of the pupils in general subjects in upper secondary education had parents with tertiary education. The same applied to 22 per cent of the pupils in vocational educational studies in upper secondary education.

Fewer pupils in secondary schools

There were 214 200 pupils in upper secondary schools and folk high schools in the autumn 2001, a decline of 7 per cent compared with the autumn 1998.

There was a decline of 1 per cent for pupils under the Upper Secondary Education Act compared with the autumn 2000 and just minor changes for pupils in folk high schools.

There was a decline of 2 per cent for apprentices comparing 2000 and 2001. On the other hand the number of pupils in labour market courses decreased by 24 per cent and the decline for pupils in other upper secondary programmes was 20 per cent.

Almost 200 000 students were enrolled

Almost 200 000 students were enrolled in higher education autumn 2001, the last three years the total number of students has been above 190 000. At universities and scientific colleges more than 80 000 students were enrolled, almost 120 000 students at colleges and about 25 000 at a private institution.

Most women in folk high schools and most men as apprentices

49 per cent of the pupils in upper secondary education were women in the autumn 2001. But there are differences between types of education. While 64 per cent of the pupils in folk high schools were women, the equivalent per cent for apprentices was 31. For pupils in labour market courses and in other upper secondary programmes, respectively 53 and 57 per cent were women.
