220 500 children in kindergartens

A total of 213 100 children aged 0-6 had a place in kindergarten by the end of 2004. In addition, 7 000 children went to open kindergartens. The total number of children in kindergartens was thus 220 500. This is an increase of 8 600 kindergartens places, or 4.1 per cent, since the end of 2003.

120 400 children, or 57 per cent, had a place in a public kindergarten while 92 700 children, or 43 per cent, had a place in a private kindergarten. This amounts to an increase of just 1 percentage point in private kindergarten compared with 2003.

At the end of 2004 almost 157 100 places in kindergartens are defined as full-time places. This is an increase of 14 700 places, or 4 percentage points. A place used by agreement 33 or more hours per week counts as a full-time place.

Kindergartens in Oslo, Akershus and Finnmark had the highest proportion of full-time places, with 92, 88 and 84 per cent respectively. Oppland (52 per cent) had the lowest percentage of full-time places. Children in open kindergartens are not included.

Almost 60 500 people were employed in kindergartens, and in total they worked 46 500 man-years by the end of 2004. 33 per cent of the employees have an approved pre-school teacher education, which is nearly at the same level as the previous year.
