Largest increase in private kindergartens

By the end of 2003 nearly 205 200 children had a place in kindergarten. This is an increase of 6 900 kindergarten places since 2002. 65 per cent of the increase was in private kindergartens.

A total of 205 172 children aged 0-6 had a place in kindergarten by the end of 2003, an increase of 3.5 per cent compared with 2002. In addition 6 700 children also participated in open kindergarten programmes. A total of 211 900 children were enlisted in some kind of kindergarten programme. 86 530 children, or 42 per cent, were in a private kindergarten while 118 642 had a place in a public kindergarten.

At the end of 2003 almost 58 400 persons were employed in kindergartens, and in total they worked 44 400 man-years. The man-years worked amounted to an increase of just above 4 per cent since 2002. 33 per cent of the employees had an approved pre-school teacher education, which is an increase of 32 per cent from 2002.
