Nearly 94 000 employed in kindergartens

There were 93 800 employees in kindergartens in 2014. Ninety per cent of all directors and educational leaders had pre-school teacher education. Ninety-two per cent of the directors and 89 per cent of the educational leaders had an approved pre-school teacher education. One per cent of the directors and 9 per cent of the educational leaders had dispensation from the educational requirement.

The proportion of directors and educational leaders who had pre-school teacher education increased by 1 and 3 percentage points respectively compared with the previous year.

All employees in kindergartens in total worked 75 000 man-years by the end of 2014. Directors worked 5 000 man-years, while educational leaders worked 23 600 man-years.

Stable proportion of children in kindergarten

In total, 286 400 children attended kindergarten by the end of 2014. Ninety-nine per cent of all children in kindergarten were in the age group 1-5 years. They amounted to 90 per cent of all children in this age group in Norway.

The proportion of children aged 1-5 years who attended kindergarten had increased by 30 percentage points since 2000. About 80 per cent of children aged 1-2 years and 97 per cent of children aged 3-5 years attended kindergarten in 2014.

The number of children from linguistic and cultural minorities in kindergarten has increased in recent years. The number of children in kindergarten with this background has increased by 9 per cent in the last five years, from 37 600 children in 2009 to 41 000 children in 2014. Seventy-five per cent of all children aged 1-5 years from linguistic and cultural minorities attended kindergarten in 2014. By comparison, 68 per cent of all children in the same age group and same background were in kindergartens in 2009.
