1675 injured in traffic so far this year

53 persons were killed in road traffic accidents on Norwegian roads in the two first months of 2002, while 1675 were injured. 135 of these were dangerously or seriously injured. On average, 28 persons were injured in traffic accidents every day in January and February.

27 of the fatalities were due to head-on accidents and 12 persons were killed due to single vehicles running of the road.

According to preliminary figures, a total of 53 persons have been killed in road traffic accidents so far this year, while 1 675 have been injured. This is eight more casualties and 210 more injuries than in the same period of 2001. The average figures for the first two months of the period 1997-2001 were 43 and 1 516, respectively.

Of the 53 casualties in January and February, two were children under the age of six, 11 persons were between 13 and 24 years old, 14 were between 25 and 39 years old, 15 were in the age group 40-59, and 11 persons were more than 60 years old.

High number of serious injuries

135 persons were dangerously or seriously injured in the first two months of 2002, which is close to 8.1 per cent of the total number of injuries. 1 341 persons, or 80.1 per cent, were slightly injured. In the remaining cases, the degree of injury was not stated.

Accidents involving heavy vehicles

In the first two months of 2002, six persons (five drivers of automobiles and one passenger) have been killed and 76 persons (52 drivers of automobiles and 24 passengers) have been injured in accidents involving heavy vehicles. In these accidents, a total of 18 injuries and one fatality were caused by rear end accidents, while five persons were killed and 36 injured in head-on accidents involving heavy vehicles.

Fewer killed in February

The first overview for February shows that 18 persons were killed on Norwegian roads in this period. This is one more than in February last year, but two less than the average figure for the month of February in the years 1997-2001. Of the 18 casualties, ten were drivers of automobiles, six were passengers of automobiles, one was a pedestrian and one was driving a tractor.

The revised figures for 2001 show that 276 persons were killed and 11 515 injured on Norwegian roads last year.

The accident statistics for 2001 that is used for comparative purposes are preliminary figures. Figures for 2001 presented in the tables 1-10 are the last revised.
