In May 2012, 53 persons were severely injured and 13 persons were killed in road traffic accidents, according to preliminary figures.

Persons seriously injured. January-May 2002-2012

Persons killed. January-May 2002-2012

The average for May over the last 10 years is 85 severely injured and 21 fatalities. In May 2011, 59 persons were severely injured and 10 persons were killed. The fatality figure was later adjusted to 67 severely injured and 11 killed.

Of the fatalities last month, five were car drivers, two were car passengers, three were motorcyclists, two were cyclists and one was a pedestrian.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Around 33 per cent of the casualties reported so far this year belonged to this category. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change.
