Accidents claimed nine lives

The number of people killed in road traffic accidents is still higher than it was at the same time last year. In the last four months, however, the number of deaths has been lower than in the corresponding months in 2007. Nine people lost their lives last month, thirteen fewer than in November last year.

The fatalities last month included five vehicle drivers, two passengers and two pedestrians. 235 people have been killed in road traffic accidents so far this year, compared to 218 in the first eleven months of 2007. Injury figures have decreased. According to preliminary figures, 10 363 people have been injured in road traffic accidents so far this year, compared with 11 086 in the same period of 2007. The figure was later adjusted to 11 185. The number of severe injuries remains virtually unchanged compared with last year.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Around 27 per cent of the casualties reported thus far in 2008 belonged to this category. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change.
