The corresponding figures for 2006 were 7 829 accidents, 242 fatalities and 11 173 injuries, of which 906 were severe.

Head-on collisions and driving off the road accidents overrepresented

103 of those who were killed in road traffic accidents lost their lives in head-on collisions. This is the same figure as in 2006. 69 people were killed in driving off the road accidents, three fewer than in 2006.

December figures below average

525 accidents were reported to the police in December. 14 people were killed and 823 injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures. The corresponding figures for 2006 were 670 accidents, 30 fatalities and 965 injuries. The December average over the last five years is 24 fatalities and 889 injuries. The 14 people who were killed in road traffic accidents in December included seven drivers of cars, two car passengers, two pedestrians and three other road users.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change.

New classification of injury

From January 2008 Statistics Norway has implemented a new classification system of injuries. The previously used terms “very seriously injured” and “seriously injured” will be grouped together under the blanket term “severely injured”.
