16 killed and 985 injured in September

The Police registered 684 injury road accidents in Norway in September this year. Preliminary figures show that 16 people were killed and 985 were injured in these accidents.

Preliminary figures for the same month last year showed 16 fatalities and 1 021 injuries. From 1997 to 2006 an average of 26 people have been killed and 977 have been injured on Norwegian roads in September.

Among the 16 people killed in road traffic accidents in September, there were 11 drivers of cars, two car passengers and three motorcyclists.

164 killed so far this year

A total of 164 people have been killed in road traffic accidents in Norway from January to September this year. This compares with 156 people in the same period last year. The 10-year average from January to September was 215 people killed.

Fewer people injured

The preliminary figures so far this year shows a total of 8 128 people injured in road accidents. This compares with 8 709 injuries in the same period last year. The ten-year average for 1997-2006 shows 8 516 people injured.

More fatalities in heavy goods vehicle accidents

Preliminary figures for the first three quarters of 2006, show that 187 accidents involved heavy goods vehicles. In these accidents, 38 people were killed, while 224 people were injured. This compares with 193 accidents, 293 injured and 27 killed in the same period last year.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.

The accident figures for 2005 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary.
