More road traffic accidents in July

A total of 683 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in July. 31 people were killed and 999 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.

This compares with 19 people killed and 966 injured in July 2005. Figures for the ten-year period 1997-2006 show that 30 were killed and 1 007 injured on average in July road traffic accidents. Among the 31 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, fifteen people were drivers of cars, four were car passengers, eight were motorcyclists, two were cyclists, one pedestrian and one other road user.

127 killed so far this year

A total of 127 people have been killed in road traffic accidents in Norway from January to July this year. This compares with 118 people in the same period last year. The 10-year average from January to July was 161 people killed.

The preliminary figures show that a total of 5 986 people have been injured in Norwegian traffic so far in 2006. 523 of these were seriously injured. The comparative figure for 2005 was 6 485 people injured, while the average for the period 1997-2006 is 6 308 people injured.

More fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles

There have been 142 accidents involving lorries so far this year. 30 people have been killed and 177 have been injured in such accidents. This compares with 157 accidents, 23 killed and 237 injured in the same period in 2005.

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.

The accident figures for 2005 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary.
