99 fatalities in road traffic accidents

A total of 99 people have lost their lives on Norwegian roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures. This is lower than the comparative figure for last year and the average for the period 1996-2005. The figures for June show that 21 people were killed in Norwegian road traffic last month, seven fewer than in June last year.

A total of 804 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in June. According to preliminary figures, 21 people were killed and 1 217 were injured in these accidents. Comparative figures for June last year show that 28 people were killed and 1 037 injured on Norwegian roads, while the average figures for the period 1996-2005 are 28 fatalities and 1 053 injuries in June.

Of the 21 people that were killed in road traffic accidents last month, eight were drivers of cars, six were passengers in cars, three were motorcyclists, two were mopedists, one was cyclist and one was another road-user.

Fewer children killed

So far in 2005, one child under the age of 13 years was killed in Norwegian traffic. The comparative figure for the same period in 2004 was seven children killed, while the average for the last five years is four children.

Fewer killed in the age group 20-24

15 people in the age group 20-24 years have been killed so far in 2005, which is six fewer than in the same period of last year and two fewer than the average figure for the period 2001-2005. 14 of these people in the age group 20-24 were drivers and passengers in cars.

Increase in number of injuries

The preliminary figures show that a total of 5 459 people have been injured in Norwegian road traffic so far in 2005. The comparative figure for 2004 was 5 403 injured, while the average for the period 1996-2005 is 5 225 injured in the first six months of the year.

Decrease in number of head-on accidents

So far this year 42 people have lost their lives and 984 people injured in head-on accidents. The comparative figure for 2004 were 64 killed and 1 093 injured.

Increase in number of overturning accidents

In the first six months of 2004 34 people were killed and 1 264 injured in overturning accidents. The comparative figure for 2005 is 32 killed and 1 366 injured.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. In addition, the total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Future figures may prove that there was no injury.

The figures for 2004 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary. The 2004 figures presented in tables 1-9 are final.
