17 fatalities and 695 injured in March

A total of 473 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in March. 17 people lost their lives and 695 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.

Comparative figures for March 2004 show that 22 people were killed and 693 were injured, while the average figures for the ten-year period 1996-2005 are 18 fatalities and 732 injuries in the March traffic. Of the 17 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, nine were drivers of car; two were car passengers, three persons on motorcycle and three pedestrians.

Fewer people killed in the first quarter of 2005

The preliminary figures show that 48 persons have been killed and 2 320 injured on the road in the first quarter this year. Comparative figures for the same period last year were 63 killed and 2 373 injured. The average figures for the first quarter in 1996-2005 are 60 persons killed and 2 333 injured.

More people killed involving heavy vehicles

The preliminary figures for the first quarter 2005 show 65 accidents involving lorries. Nine persons were killed, 94 persons were injured. Comparative figures for the same period last year show 67 accidents, 101 injured and four killed. The average figures for the first quarter 2001-2005 show seven persons killed and 104 injured.

The comparative figures for 2004

The last comparative figures for 2004 show 8 413 accidents, 12 105 injured and 257 persons killed.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.

The accident figures for 2004 and 2005 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary.
