19 fatalities and 1 094 injured

A total of 764 road traffic accidents were reported to the Norwegian police in September. According to the preliminary figures 19 people were killed and 1 097 were injured in these accidents.

The number of injures is higher than the average of the ten years period 1995-2004. Comparative figures for September last year show 23 people killed and 1 039 injured. Average figures for the period 1995-2004 are 27 fatalities and 958 injuries in September.

Among the 19 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, eleven were drivers of cars, two were car passengers, four were motorcyclists, one cyclist and one pedestrian.

195 killed so far this year

A total of 195 people have lost their lives on Norwegian roads so far this year. The comparative figure for last year was 201 killed from January to September, while the average figure for the period 1995-2004 is 224 people killed.

Increase in number of injured

The preliminary figures show that a total of 8 809 people have been injured in Norwegian traffic so far in 2004. The comparative figure for 2003 was 8 498 injured from January to September. The average figure for the period 1995-2004 is 8 487 injured.

Fewer killed in accidents involving heavy vehicles

The preliminary figures for the period from January to September this year show 194 accidents involving lorries. In these accidents 18 people were killed and 277 people were injured. Comparative figures for the same period in 2003 show 187 accidents, 237 injured and 26 killed.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. In addition, the total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Future figures may prove that there was no injury.
