More people killed in road traffic this year

A total of 131 people have lost their lives on Norwegian roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures. This is higher than the comparative figure for last year but lower than the average for the period 1995-2004. The figures for June show that 27 people were killed in Norwegian road traffic last month, 12 more than in June last year.

A total of 758 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in June. According to preliminary figures, 27 people were killed and 1 037 were injured in these accidents. Comparative figures for June last year show that 15 people were killed and 1 080 injured on Norwegian roads, while the average figures for the period 1995-2004 are 28 fatalities and 1 021 injuries in June.

Of the 27 people that were killed in road traffic accidents last month, 10 were drivers of cars, four were passengers in cars, six were motorcyclists, two were mopedists, two were cyclists, two were pedestrians and one was driver of tractor.

Six children killed

So far in 2004, six children under the age of 13 lost their lives in Norwegian traffic, one fewer than in the first half year of 2003. Three of these children were passengers in cars, one child was a pedestrian and two were cyclists.

More killed in the age group 20-24

21 people in the age group 20-24 years have been killed so far in 2004, which is 12 more than in the same period of last year and two more than the average figure for the period 2000-2004. 16 of these people in the age group 20-24 were drivers and passengers in cars.

Increase in number of injuries

The preliminary figures show that a total of 5 403 people have been injured in Norwegian road traffic so far in 2004. The comparative figure for 2003 was 5 209 injured, while the average for the period 1995-2004 is 5 182 injured in the first six months of the year.

Increase in number of head-on accidents

So far this year 64 people have lost their lives and 1 093 people injured in head-on accidents. The comparative figure for 2003 were 44 killed and 1 066 injured.

Decrease in number of overturning accidents

In the first six months of 2003 43 people were killed and 1 324 injured in overturning accidents. The comparative figure for 2004 is 34 killed and 1 264 injured.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.

The accident figures for 2004 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary. The figures for 2003 presented in the tables 1-9 are final.
