19 killed and 1 047 injured in May

A total of 733 road traffic accidents were reported to the Norwegian police in May according to the preliminary figures. 19 persons lost their lives and 1 047 were injured in these accidents.

Last time the number of persons killed in May was nearly this digit was in 1993, when 20 persons where killed in Norwegian traffic in May. On the other hand the number of injures is higher than the average of the ten years period 1995-2004. Comparative figures for May last year show that 27 persons were killed and 867 injured on Norwegian roads, while the average figures for the period 1995-2004 are 28 fatalities and 860 injuries in May.

Of the 19 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, eight were drivers of automobiles, two were passengers of automobile, two were motorcyclists, one person on moped, one was cyclists, four were pedestrians and one person classified as other type of road user.

102 killed so far this year

A total of 102 persons have lost their lives on Norwegian roads so far this year. The comparative figure for last year was 101 killed from January to May, while the average figure for the period 1995-2004 is 110 persons killed.

Increase in number of injured

The preliminary figures show that a total of 4 318 persons have been injured in Norwegian traffic so far in 2004. The comparative figure for 2003 was 4 036 persons injured from January to May. Also the average figures for the period 1995-2004 shows 4 036 persons injured.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.

The accident figures for 2004 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary. The figures for 2003 presented in the tables 1-9 are final.
