20 killed and 693 injured in March

A total of 470 road traffic accidents were reported to the Norwegian police in March. 20 people lost their lives and 693 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.

Comparative figures for March 2003 show that 18 people were killed and 854 were injured, while the average figures for the ten-year period 1995-2004 are 20 fatalities and 736 injuries in March traffic. Of the 20 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, 12 were drivers of automobiles, three were passengers of automobiles, one person on motorcycle, one person on cycle and three pedestrians.

More people killed in the first quarter of 2004

The preliminary figures show that 59 persons have been killed and 2 373 injured on the road in the 1s t quarter this year. Comparative figures for the same period last year were 49 killed and 2 356 injured. The average figures for the 1s t quarter in 1995-2004 are 62 persons killed and 2 358 injured.

More people injured involving heavy vehicles

The preliminary figures for the 1s t quarter this year show 67 accidents involving lorries. Four persons were killed, 101 persons were injured. Comparative figures for the same period last year show 67 accidents, 76 injured and five killed. Average figures for the 1s t quarter 2000-2004 show six persons killed and 103 injured.

The last comparative figures for 2003 show 8 201 accidents, 11 760 injured and 280 persons killed.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.

The accident figures for 2003 and 2004 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary.
