27 persons killed and 867 injured in May

A total of 606 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in May, according to preliminary figures. 27 persons lost their lives and 867 were injured in these accidents. Compared with last year, the number of young drivers being killed decreased.

Comparative figures for May last year show that 36 persons were killed and 1 039 injured on Norwegian roads, while the average figures for the period 1994-2003 are 29 fatalities and 901 injuries in May. Of the 27 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, 13 were drivers of automobiles, five were passengers of automobiles, five were motorcyclists, one was a mopedallist and three were cyclists.

Hundred killed so far this year

A total of 100 persons have lost their lives on Norwegian roads so far this year, the lowest figure since 1996. The comparative figure for last year was 123 persons killed from January to May, while the average figure for the period 1994-2003 is 110 persons killed in the first five months of the year.

Decrease in number of young drivers killed

A total of 49 drivers of automobiles were killed in the first five months of 2003, compared with 64 drivers killed in the same period last year. The decrease was substantial in the age group 30-39 years. So far this year, seven drivers of automobiles in the age group 30-39 years have lost their lives on Norwegian roads, while the comparative figure for 2002 was 17 drivers killed.

Similarly, fewer drivers of automobiles in the age groups 18-19 years, 20-24 years and 25-29 years have been killed in the first five months of 2003. In the age group 40-49 years, on the other hand, nine more drivers of automobiles have been killed compared with the same period in 2002.

Fewer motorcyclists injured

So far in 2003, nine motorcyclists have been killed and 136 have been injured on Norwegian roads, which is the same number of fatalities - but 57 fewer injuries - compared with the preliminary figures for the same period of 2002.

Decrease in total number of injuries

The preliminary figures show that a total of 4 036 persons have been injured in Norwegian traffic so far in 2003. The comparative figure for 2002 was 4 451 persons injured, while the average for the period 1994-2003 is 4 107 persons injured in the first five months of the year.

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures.

The accident figures for 2002 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary. The figures for 2002 presented in the tables 1-8 are final.
